Your DUNS number can be perfectly valid and still be tied to details that are wrong. Maybe the address is from three offices ago, the phone number belongs to a former employee, or the industry code describes a business you no longer run. The number works, but the record behind it doesn’t match reality, and that mismatch is what trips up platform verifications and buyer checks.
This guide covers how to fix incorrect DUNS number details of any kind. If your problem is specifically the company name or the address, we have dedicated guides for those, linked below. This one is the wider picture: which details can be wrong, how to diagnose them, and how to get them corrected.
Why Incorrect Details Matter
A DUNS record isn’t checked once and forgotten. Platforms, suppliers and partners look at what D&B currently holds about your business. D&B India’s own guidance lists “not updating business details after getting your DUNS number” as a common mistake, and says that incorrect information can affect your business’s credibility and credit evaluation.
In practice, the damage usually shows up in three places:
- Platform verification fails because your entered details don’t match the record
- Buyer or vendor onboarding stalls because a procurement team sees conflicting information
- Your credit file reflects an outdated picture of your business
Which Details Can Be Wrong
Most people only think about the name and address, but a DUNS record holds more than that. Common problem areas include:
- Legal business name: such as a trade name, old name or typo
- Registered address: usually after a move
- Phone number and email: especially if they’re personal or no longer in use
- Number of employees: which changes as you grow or shrink
- Industry classification code: such as an incorrect NIC, SIC or NAICS code
- Website: if it’s missing, broken or points to an old domain
- Owner or director details: after a change in management
- Business structure: after converting from one entity type to another
D&B India lists wrong industry codes, personal contact details, outdated director information and inactive websites among the common errors it sees.
Step 1: Find Out What D&B Currently Holds
Before you request anything, look at the record as it stands. Use D&B’s official D-U-N-S Number lookup and compare every field against your current registration documents, such as your Certificate of Incorporation, GST certificate and recent address proof.
Write down each mismatch. Requests that say “the address is wrong” move slower than requests that say “the address shows X, the correct registered address is Y, here is the document.”
Step 2: Check That It’s Actually Your Record
Before correcting anything, rule out two situations that look like “wrong details” but need a different fix:
- It’s a different entity’s number: A parent company, subsidiary or sister concern may have its own DUNS number.
- There’s a duplicate record: If two records exist for your business, correcting one doesn’t solve the underlying problem, and you should tell D&B about the duplicate directly.
Don’t apply for a new DUNS number to “start clean.” That is how duplicates get created.
Step 3: Submit the Correction to D&B
This is the step where it matters which country you’re in, so here is what we could verify and what we couldn’t.
For U.S.-based, non-public companies: D&B offers a free tool called the D-U-N-S Profile Manager. According to D&B’s own page, it lets a verified representative view or request updates to basic business information such as legal name, address or number of employees. You need to be the company’s owner, director or officer, and D&B says it reviews all updates and may contact a registered company officer to confirm them. D&B also says it cannot guarantee that requested updates will be accepted.
For Indian businesses: D&B’s U.S. page describes that tool for U.S.-based organizations, and D&B India’s pages we reviewed don’t spell out a step-by-step submission channel. So we can’t tell you there is a single official form for India. The safest route is to start from D&B India’s official website (dnb.co.in), use the update or contact options there, and send D&B the corrected details with supporting documents. If you’re unsure which channel applies to you, ask D&B support before submitting.
Whichever route applies to you, include:
- Your DUNS number
- The incorrect detail as it currently appears
- The correct detail
- A supporting document for each change
Step 4: Expect Verification, Not Instant Approval
D&B reviews requested updates rather than applying them automatically. D&B India says corrections typically take a few business days once accurate details are submitted, though that is a general statement, and cases involving duplicates, entity changes or missing documents can take longer. Respond quickly if D&B asks follow-up questions.
Step 5: Recheck the Record, Then Retry Your Platform
Once D&B confirms the update, run the lookup again and confirm every field now matches your documents. Only then retry the Apple, Google, Microsoft or Meta verification that was failing. Platforms read D&B’s data, so retrying earlier usually repeats the same error.
Fix Your Own Records First
One more cause of “incorrect details” is that your own paperwork disagrees with itself. If your GST certificate shows one address, your MCA record shows another and your DUNS record shows a third, correcting only one of them won’t fix the mismatch. Update the underlying registrations first where needed, then bring the DUNS record in line.
How to Stop It Happening Again
- Review your DUNS record once a year: and after any major change such as a move, a rename or a change in ownership. D&B itself recommends reviewing your information annually.
- Use business contact details: not a personal phone number or email
- Keep your website live: and linked to your correct domain
- Update the DUNS record in the same week: you update GST or MCA details
Want Your DUNS Details Corrected ASAP? Connect With DUNS Assist
If incorrect details are blocking a platform verification and you need them fixed quickly, contact DUNS Assist. Can I fix incorrect DUNS number details without applying for a new number?
Yes. Your existing DUNS number stays the same, and you request corrections to the record. A new application can create a duplicate record and make things worse.
Is it free to correct my DUNS details?
D&B’s U.S. page says its D-U-N-S Profile Manager is free for eligible U.S.-based, non-public companies. For Indian businesses, confirm current terms with D&B India before submitting.
How long does a correction take?
D&B India says corrections typically take a few business days once accurate details are submitted. Cases with duplicates or missing documents can take longer.
Who can request changes to a DUNS record?
On D&B’s U.S. tool, the requester must be the company’s owner, director or officer, and D&B may contact a registered company officer to confirm the update.
Will D&B always accept my requested update?
Not necessarily. D&B says it reviews every request and cannot guarantee that updates will be accepted, which is why supporting documents matter.
