Do You Need a D-U-N-S Number for UAE Company Registration from India?

If you’re an Indian entrepreneur setting up a company in the UAE whether on the mainland or in a free zone like DMCC, IFZA, or JAFZA you may have come across DUNS numbers mentioned somewhere in the process and wondered if it’s a required part of registration. Here’s the straightforward answer: a DUNS number is not required to register a company in the UAE. It’s a separate, optional identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet, not a government registration requirement from the UAE’s Department of Economic Development (DED) or any free zone authority.

That said, it does become genuinely relevant for Indian-owned UAE businesses in specific, common situations, which this guide walks through.

What Actually Registers Your UAE Company

Setting up a company in the UAE whether as an Indian resident applying remotely or in person goes through entirely separate channels from D&B:

  • Your trade license: issued by the DED for mainland companies, or by the relevant free zone authority (DMCC, IFZA, DAFZA, DIFC, and others) for free zone entities
  • Your TRN (Tax Registration Number): issued by the UAE’s Federal Tax Authority, relevant if your business is VAT or corporate tax registered

Neither of these processes involves D&B or requires a DUNS number at any stage. You can complete your entire UAE company registration mainland or free zone without ever touching DUNS.

Why the Confusion Happens

A lot of guidance aimed at UAE business setup bundles DUNS numbers into general “things to know” content, often because some free zones (DMCC, DIFC, and DAFZA among them) have arrangements that make it easier for member companies to apply for a DUNS number through the free zone itself.

This convenience is sometimes presented in a way that makes it sound like a required registration step, when it’s actually an optional add-on that these free zones facilitate, not something they require.

When a DUNS Number Actually Becomes Relevant for Your UAE Company

Despite not being a requirement for registration, the DUNS number is still relevant in a couple of specific and everyday scenarios for businesses in the UAE owned by Indians:

DUNS number check for multinational companies’ procurement and vendor onboarding systems: Many multinational companies check the DUNS number as part of their standard due diligence process, not only for UAE-registered vendors, but also for all vendors, irrespective of their country of registration.

International banking and trade finance: For higher credit or financing amounts, larger companies dealing cross-border with banks and financial institutions may refer to the DUNS number as one means for checking the credibility of a company.

Government and large enterprise procurement: Sometimes the government or large businesses might ask for a DUNS number as part of their vendor due diligence checks, in addition to your trade license.

Global platform and marketplace accounts: In case your UAE business will be operating on platforms such as Apple Developer, Google Play Console, or verified accounts on any other platform, you must verify your account using the same DUNS method as in the rest of the world.

International credit profile: If you’re looking to build international credibility for your business, you may need to get them to see the UAE-based company in your D&B number, and a DUNS number will help you do just that.

Even if none of these apply to your UAE company at this time, you don’t need to obtain a DUNS number just because you heard you needed it when you first started trying to establish your company.

Should You Get One While Setting Up Your UAE Company, Even If Not Required?

If you are establishing your company in the UAE with the intent of doing business abroad, dealing with clients from overseas, or engaging in bigger business-to-business deals, then it might make sense to request a DUNS number at the time of starting your company, because at some stage you’re going to need it anyway, and you will already have all the documentation required for it by the time you register the company (trade license, company address, ownership structure).

If your UAE company is wholly local, with no international trading arm, then there’s no hurry to include this on the list of things to do when setting up.

What You’ll Need If You Do Apply

Once your UAE company registration is complete, applying for a DUNS number typically requires:

  • Your trade license (mainland or free zone)
  • Your registered business name, address, and licensed activity
  • Contact details for an authorized signatory
  • Your TRN, if your business is VAT-registered

The standard application through D&B is free, the same as it is anywhere else in the world you’re not required to pay a fee just to be issued the number itself.

A Note for Indian Founders Specifically

If you already have a DUNS number for an Indian entity and are now setting up a separate UAE company, keep in mind these are two different legal entities, and your Indian DUNS number doesn’t automatically extend to your new UAE business.

You’ll need a separate DUNS number for the UAE entity, tied to its own trade license and registration details, even if both companies share the same ownership.

Is a DUNS number mandatory to register a company in the UAE?

No — UAE company registration goes through the DED or your free zone authority and doesn’t require a DUNS number at any stage.

No, though some free zones like DMCC, DIFC, and DAFZA facilitate DUNS registration as a convenience for member companies, it’s not a requirement for setting up or maintaining your free zone company.

Now a UAE company is a separate legal entity and needs its own DUNS number, tied to its UAE trade license and registration details.

Mainly for multinational vendor registration, international banking or trade finance, large procurement processes, or global platform accounts not for the UAE registration process itself.

Yes standard registration through D&B is free, regardless of whether your company is mainland or free zone registered.
